Well Tilalt
Within the last ten years considerable change of climate was observed in the north of Niger – in our opinion due to global warming.
Sufficient wells that are in good working conditions are rare. In the dry season the locals are thus forced to shoulder long distances under hardest conditions to get their water.
The well at „Tilalt“ has a depth of about 50 meters and was dug decades ago. No matter who dug the well at the time, all Tuarge nomades of the Azawagh region have the right to make use of such wells freely.
Due to its extensive use the walls of the Tilalt well were crumbling and the beams could not resist the stress anymore.
Since the edge of the well was not elevated, sand and rocks or sometimes animal feces were getting into the well during the rainy season. By such contamination the locals can easily get diarreha or cholera. In particular women and children are affected and most vulnerable.
In order to prevent further erosion or even a collapse of the well, a total reconstruction of the well „Tilalt“ was done. The fixing of concrete rings prevent the walls from further decay. The well is now elevated and the pulling tool renewed.
By involving the local Tuareg clans with the various well works, a long-term maintenance of the vitally important water source is guaranteed.
The cost of this extensive well reconstruction of „Tilalt“ was CHF 12'650.-
