Home for Children - Bararan N’Gougaram
In the North of Niger exceptional conditions are still prevailing since February 2007. The reason of the conflict lies in the incessant discrimination of the Tuareg population of the barren desert area. Due to the fact that the Nigerien government failed to realize development projects, in the long run it has lead to social and economical misery. At this very moment the situation is utterly devastating, so that by the fighting the entire area has become very unsafe for the resident Tuareg. Also the Nomad’s freedom of movement is extremely restricted by the Nigerien military and controlled by them through curfews, Check-Points, scattered landmines and reprisals.
As a result of the current political situation all schools in the Talak region are closed. It is already more than a year since the 450 Tuareg children have had the possibility to attend school. And for the future of those children attending school is most important.
Education – Means Hope for a better Future
The starting point of our new project is therefore education.
We want to make sure that despite the instable political situation the children will still stand a chance to attend school. The Talak valley stretches out over 80 kilometres and the families live scattered here and there. Therefore, it is impossible for the children to cover such a distance daily and besides it is also dangerous. For this reason we have opened our „Home for Children” in Arlit.
After negotiations between ENMIGRAW Niger and the local authorities we have finally received a positive answer. The Tuareg children are now allowed to attend classes at the various public schools of Arlit.
For the entire project we have rented a house, which we have furnished appropriately. We also bought school supplies and clothes, employed a chef (cook) and three women as child carers (supervising).
To cover the distance to and from the families at the beginning and end of each scholastic year, we will rent an appropriate vehicle.
Currently there are 52 children in our care. Since the number of pupils is constantly rising, we count with successively increasing costs.
According to our budget, for only CHF 850.-- per year we can finance the school year for one child.

With your donation for this project you help to ensure that our Tuareg children will also in the future be able to attend school.
A further possibility would be a sponsorship:
Adopt a school sponsorship and with your financial support of CHF 65.--per month you will thus grant a long-term support.
