Women's project "TELLIT"
Having lost their herds by the drought catastrophe the women had very little possibilties for work and income. Because of that they lost their traditional economic responsibility in the community and became dependent on the men’s income equally miserable.
2004 ENMIGRAW supported an initiative of the women of Gougaram in the region of Talak to found a cooperative. „Tellit“ means „moon“ in Tamashek, the Tuaregs‘ language.
We helped them to start the production of raffia mats, baskets and bags by giving them advice and a microcredit. They bought the raw material taking the money from the selfadministrated common cash-box which was financed by the microcredit. The goods were sold on the local markets.
The profit is distributed among the women while the common cash-box remains for the coming purchases.
Now all women of the region of Talak can buy dried leaves of dum palms at a good price without being forced to go the long and expensive way to the nearest town.
In this way they have work and income for their families. The women were successful in this project right away thanks to their characteristic motivation, self-confidence and discipline.

The work in this project has meanwhile become an essential part of the women's life in Gougaram. Through this they have achieved more economic responsibility in the family, more independence and dignity in the community in addition to resources for food and cloths.
