Nomad School „Tschinsakan“ in the Azawag Region
This region is situated about 150 km southwest of Agadez in direction In Gall. There are still some migrant Tuareg tribes and wells with a depth of about 70 meters are widely dispersed.
In 2007/2009 we reconstructed three wells in this area. During that time we also noticed that the Nomad children did not have any opportunity to attend school to at least learn the basics, such as reading, writing and arithmetics. The thought of opening a Nomad school for about 30-40
children has never left us since.
Despite their herds the migrant families do not wander about too far from Tschinsakan and we therefore consider this area as ideal for such a project.
Our aim is that the children could still sleep at their parent’s and lunch could be provided at school.
To provide food supply is utterly important, because it ensures that children will be sent to school despite long distances.
Our idea is a school room in form of a mat hangar that could be dislocated if needed. All children in all age categories are illiterate and therefore one school room would be sufficient to start with.
We can also recommend two „teachers“ who have studied in Niamey and still live with their families in the desert. We are convinced they would takle this task with great dedication. The curriculum of this primary school would include reading, writing and arithmetics. In our opinion, the two teachers we suggest are up to our requirements.
At the Ministry of Education in Arlit, ENMIGRAW Niger has obtained the requested authorization for this project .
„AKiSa“, a German/Swiss organization that supports basic education for children in the Sahara has contacted us and offered their cooperation.
They proposed to finance the necessary school material for teachers and children. They also offered to contribute CHF 3‘200.-- to the building of the hangar, the kitchen as well as simple toilets.
We are very happy about this support. Education is the only way to break the cycle of poverty and creating a more promising future!
